Transitional stance

Transitional stances trade stability for mobility. These “necessary evils” are only to be used when changing from one stance to another. Transitional stances are exited the moment they are entered, to maximize your stability and your fluidity of motion. Untrained eyes never see a transitional stance, as they are one frame in the video of your motion. However, they must be there to ensure that you aren’t cutting corners.
Goshin-Jutsu’s common transitional stances are:
- Cat stance (used in stepping and evasion techniques)
- Crane stance (used to setup kicks)
- Hook stance (used to turn around, or to drive spinning techniques)
- Sanchin dachi (in the context of being used to change directions and/or tenkan)
- Kneeling (when recovering from prone positions)
Again, do not remain in transitional stances for any prolonged time, since your balance can be easily compromised from these positions.
