[Video of this waza fast and slow, from the side, and ideally, overhead]

Defense against a pursuit punch

  • 7-3 inside and immediately twist inside with an opposite-side hassō-shutō strike to the opponent’s bicep.
  • Execute an outside shutō block to the opponent’s wrist.
  • Twist towards the opponent, with an opposite-side spearhand strike to their eye.
  • Execute a same-side palmheel strike to the opponent’s chest, grabbing their gi to pull them upright.
  • Execute a spearhand strike to their groin.
  • Execute a same-side palmheel strike to the opponent’s chest, grabbing their gi to pull them upright.
  • Execute a spearhand strike to their throat.
  • Execute a same-side palmheel strike to the opponent’s chest, grabbing their gi to pull them upright.
  • Execute an uppercut to the solar plexus.

Notes

This is the “Speed Technique.” When done properly, you will complete 9 accurate, full-power strikes in < 2 seconds. Each technique must carry a real malicious intent; you can’t just flail your arms like a Muppet.

This waza is admittedly, more of a parlor trick than a self-defense technique, but practicing it develops your speed, and it grants, the self-confidence that comes bundled with speed.
