Defense against a front choke

  • Step straight back, entering a full-side-facing to escape the choke. Simultaneously place a spearhand in the opponent’s jugular notch (i.e., the indentation where the throat and collarbones meet) to keep them from advancing.
  • Peel the opponent’s hand off your throat with your free hand. Place their wrist on your center and twist or tenkan outside for a wristlock.
  • Finish with stomp kick or joint lock, as appropriate for the situation.
