Defense against a pursuit punch or haymaker

  • 7-3 inside. Immediately twist inside and pulling your rear leg up into a side-facing hook stance with a backfist strike to the opponent’s philtrum, as an atemi.
    • This is a “pivot-in backfist.” A pivot-out backfist uses the same directions, just replace “inside” with “outside.”
    • Please note that a pivot-out backfist is not appropriate against a haymaker; you’ll literally walk right into it.
  • Side kick to the solar plexus, abdomen, or floating ribs.
