Kihon no Tekkō was Fumio Demura's collection of the basics of tekkōjutsu, which is compatible with either version of tekkō.
Directions
[Kihon no Tekkō, performed fast and slow, viewed from cameras at #1, 3, 7, 5. Be sure that you take up the whole frame. A lot of our old kata videos are from too far away, and it hides some detail. ]
- From an attention stance, bow with the tekkō in your right hand, and return to a ready stance.
- Step your left foot out to #2, entering a left front stance facing #1, with a left downward block.
- Slide your right foot out to #8, entering a right front stance facing #1, with a right hook punch and a left reverse punch.
- Slide your left foot out to #2, entering a left front stance facing #1, with a left hook punch and a right reverse punch.
- Slide your right foot out to #8, entering a right front stance facing #1, with a right chūdan uke. Throw a right jab to the eyes and a left reverse punch to the abdomen.
- Step your left foot out to #6, entering a left front stance facing #5, with a left downward block.
- Slide your right foot out to #4, entering a right front stance facing #5, with a right hook punch and a left reverse punch.
- Slide your left foot out to #6, entering a left front stance facing #5, with a left hook punch and a right reverse punch.
- Slide your right foot out to #4, entering a right front stance facing #5, with a right chūdan uke. Throw a right jab to the eyes and a left reverse punch to the abdomen.

- Shift into a right front stance to #1 with a right downward pressing block and a left palmheel to chin-level, for a Chugoku-te guard. Throw a jab to the eyes and a reverse punch to the abdomen.
- Twist to the left and step your right foot to #4, twisting to the left again to complete tenkan. Shift onto your left foot to enter a left fighting crane stance facing #2 with a left rising block and a right downward block to #2.
- Return to a ready stance facing #1. Enter an attention stance and bow.
Notes
To aid in the development of muscle memory, this kata has many repeated series.
When using your reciprocal action, only rotate your hands a quarter-turn when using the sai. Otherwise, you’ll scrape yourself with the tine.
Bunkai
Many possible bunkai exist for any one kata. This is one example, where the tekkō is used in various ways to against opponents armed with bō.
